V-POL Audit: Aldi
Corporate Communications & Public Stance
Aldi has not issued public corporate statements regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict (2023–2024) 12. Aldi Süd issued a public statement committing €5 million to Ukraine humanitarian relief in March 2022, demonstrating the company’s willingness to issue corporate statements on geopolitical crises 1. Aldi also issued a statement regarding Turkey/Syria earthquake relief, committing €500,000 in 2023 2.
In July 2013, Aldi Netherlands informed Dutch research firm Profundo that it would not sell products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Golan Heights 3. The company subsequently reversed this position, with spokesperson Laetitia Gruwel stating the prior statement was “a false representation of reality” caused by “a mistake in the answers provided” 3. Aldi has issued no public statements on the ICJ Advisory Opinion (July 2024) or ICC arrest warrants (November 2024) regarding Israel-Palestine 12.
Operations in Occupied or Contested Territories
Aldi does not operate stores, warehouses, or franchises directly in Israel, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, or the Golan Heights 4. Aldi operates in Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries, but not in Israeli-controlled territories 4.
Aldi stocks produce (avocados and Medjool dates) supplied by Mehadrin, an Israeli agricultural exporter that operates packing facilities in West Bank settlements (Beka’ot, Messua, Tomer, Na’aran, Netiv Hagdud) and in the Golan Heights (Ramot) 4. Mehadrin exports to European supermarkets including Tesco, Albert Heijn, Costco, and Aldi 4. Aldi UK sold Specially Selected Medjool dates without country of origin labeling; barcode tracing led to the Aldi website indicating Israeli origin 5. The Islamic Human Rights Commission alleged this was a “deliberate attempt to conceal the Israeli origin” to circumvent consumer boycott 5.
Internal Governance, Content & Retail Policies
Aldi Nord partnered with Trigo Vision Ltd., an Israeli computer vision technology company headquartered in Tel Aviv, to operate a cashierless “Shop & Go” store in Utrecht, Netherlands (opened July 2022, closed October 2024) 67. Trigo raised $100 million in October 2022 (total funding $204 million) to scale autonomous retail technology across Europe and the United States 8. Trigo’s clients include Tesco (UK), Aldi Nord, REWE Group, Netto, Shufersal (Israel), and Wakefern (US) 8. Aldi Nord closed its Utrecht Trigo-powered store in October 2024, citing high investment costs, with plans to test the technology in Eindhoven 9.
No public evidence was found of HR actions, disciplinary measures, or internal policies regarding employee speech related to Israel-Palestine at Aldi.
Brand Heritage & State Partnerships
No evidence was found of Aldi utilizing military heritage, defense sector ties, or state-security origins in its commercial branding or public relations. No evidence was found of Aldi accepting state honors, hosting government officials, or entering formal non-commercial partnerships with state academic or governmental institutions related to Israeli state-backed cultural campaigns.
Lobbying, Advocacy, Financing & Logistics
Aldi Inc. registered its first federal lobbying disclosure in the United States (May 2026) via Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, covering “Food Industry (Safety, Labeling, etc.)” No Middle East or anti-BDS issues were reported in LDA filings 10. OpenSecrets records show Aldi Süd has lobbying activity focused on retail and food industry issues; no Middle East-related lobbying was identified 11.
No evidence was found of Aldi making political donations to pro-Israel organizations, military-welfare funds (FIDF, JNF/KKL), or settlement groups through corporate channels. No evidence was found of Aldi holding leadership roles in geopolitical pressure groups or anti-BDS advocacy organizations.
Trader Joe’s (owned by Aldi Nord, which operates in the US) has been targeted by BDS campaigns 1213. CodePink launched a petition with approximately 15,000 signatures demanding Trader Joe’s remove Israeli products (Bamba snacks, Israeli feta cheese, Dorot Gardens frozen herbs) “until Israel ends the occupation” 13. Trader Joe’s has not publicly responded to these demands 1213.
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (UK) ran a petition with 17,997 signatories demanding Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, M&S, Asda, and Waitrose “stop stocking all Israeli produce including dates, avocados and peppers,” referencing the ICJ July 2024 Advisory Opinion 14. Cambridge PSC documents Aldi as “not a BDS target” but “does sell Israeli produce and settlement goods,” specifically citing Mehadrin as the source of Medjool dates 15.
Corporate Structure & Primary Mission
Aldi Süd GmbH & Co. oHG and Aldi Nord GmbH & Co. oHG are privately-held German companies controlled by the Albrecht family (Karl and Theo Albrecht and their descendants) through family foundations 16. The Siepmann-Stiftung (controls 75% of Aldi Süd), Oertl-Stiftung (25%, supports heart/circulation research), and Elisen-Stiftung (25%, supports cultural projects) are the primary holding vehicles 16. No evidence was found of these foundations directing funds to FIDF, JNF/KKL, or settlement NGOs 16. No evidence was found of Aldi having state-held golden shares or corporate charter provisions tying the company to advancing state geopolitical goals.
Executive & Leadership Footprint
No public evidence was found of Aldi C-suite executives (Jason Hart former CEO Aldi USA 2015–2025,_mgr. McGrath CEO Aldi USA from May 2025, or Aldi Süd/Nord leadership) making public statements on the Israel-Palestine conflict. No evidence was found of Aldi executives or board members having personal board seats, leadership roles, or advisory positions in geopolitical pressure groups, state-aligned academic institutions, or Israeli defense-industry entities. No evidence was found of personal philanthropy by Aldi executives or controlling family members directed toward regional advocacy groups or military-welfare funds (FIDF, JNF).
The UN OHCHR Business and Human Rights Database (updated September 2025, containing 158 entries) does not list Aldi, Trader Joe’s, or Mehadrin 17. The database focuses on settlement infrastructure (construction, real estate, banking, utilities) rather than agricultural exporters 17.
